Paul, this is great if you actually use Skype. (That means it works across browsers and PCs, too.) I believe that this change is persistent (to your account) and that changing it once will change it across multiple Microsoft sites, but I’m waiting to hear back. You’ll see a new option here, called “Sound: Turn notification sounds on or off.” Just turn ’em off. In the Settings pane that appears, select Notifications (it’s the default). To disable Skype notification sounds, open or OneDrive in your web browser, click the Skype button at the top (the one with a messaging-type icon), and then click the Settings cog at the bottom. If that thing was open all day, it would drive me crazy. But it leads to a bigger problem: I also cannot use as my primarily email address as a result, too, because I prefer to use web clients. What that means to me is that I cannot leave, OneDrive and other Microsoft websites open in browser tabs because every time someone converses with me, the web browser will emit a loud “blatt” notification. But when Microsoft added the latest, plug-in-free version of its Skype pane to, and its other websites, it left off a crucial feature: The inability to disable Skype notifications. I turn off Skype notification sounds everywhere because I find them superfluous and annoying. We’ll they’ve fixed that, and in doing so, they may have just saved my sanity as well. It’s not entirely straight-forward, but then again Microsoft has a reputation for making a lot of things complicated.For the past few months, I’ve complained about the inability to disable Skype notification sounds in Microsoft’s websites. If you don’t want to install the Skype desktop app, this is an “okay” alternative but only if you are an existing Skype user. It’s still lacking a lot of the features from the Skype desktop or mobile apps, but if you only come at it expecting a Skype-Lite, then it passes through as “good enough.” Conclusion Once you’ve enabled it, there is no button to get rid of it short of completely unlinking the Microsoft account on the Skype Account Settings page.īut how does it function otherwise? We have yet to run into the same issue with Windows 7. Paul Thurrott mentioned a problem with notification spam when receiving calls over the integrated service while using Windows 8.1. Note: Voice-only calls and messaging will still work without the plugin.

Even when messaging the name from the full desktop Skype app it didn’t go through, likely because the contact was not on the list.Īnother annoyance is it requires Skype a web-plugin for video calls. The biggest problem is probably there is no way to add Skype users to your contacts list from.
For one, if you don’t have already have a Skype account via the full desktop app – the one you create via will have this crummy live: prefix added to it. It seems like a pretty good idea, but so far from what we’ve seen the implementation is terrible for new users.
